Rain or Shine, nothing stops Independence Celebration!

189 years of independence from Spain and come rain or shine the party will go on!

Hundreds of school children and many more families gather on the streets of Coco and everywhere in Costa Rica to enjoy the upcoming parade. Children participating in the parade must be signed in and at their designated station by 8am! No problem for kids who are used to being to school by 7:30. My kids are always very excited to participate in these activities, it gives them great pride.

At 9am, the parade starts. Pride goes to the youngest children as they start the parade off. Youngsters from the ages of 2 on up are lined up according to their school for the commencement! All locals schools are represented and show off their talents and honors.

It is a proud moment for all! This year was extra special for one of my sons who had the honor of carrying one of the flags in his school line up! They practiced for weeks "izquierda 2,3,4, izquierda" in English thats "left 2,3,4,left!"

Considering that this momentous occasion is in the midst of rainy season, it is a coin toss as to whether it is going to be a sunny or rainy day. It is a glorious occasion either way and the rain does not deter anyone!

All this and we were eating at the roadside pizza stand by 11am. It was a great experience for all and I hope you enjoyed it through us! Plan to visit next year and you will get fireworks and more!

Well, my daughter opted for pizza after her nutritious apple! Had to catch this because fruits don't typically come first!

Local school begins teaching the importance of "Green" young!

Local school, Los Delfines, planned a beach clean up this week in Playas del Coco. The importance of throwing trash in the proper place and recycling is growing in the area and the best place to start is with the children.

Children from Materno to First grade gathered to walk Coco Beach and pick up trash and recyclables. While there to learn the importance of keeping where they live clean, they also made the learning experience fun with games and a bonfire! Here in Costa Rica roasted marshmallows are followed by condensed milk and/or chocolate syrup, not graham crackers and chocolate bars! The kids LOVE IT!

Coco Beach Clean up!

What a great day, making it a cause to show the kids of Coco that the streets are not made for trash! Many people showed up to help clean up the beach and streets of Coco! The kids were able to paint the many trash cans that will be going up around Coco to help continue the support for a clean beautiful Coco!

Friday you can find tourists watching the beautiful sunsets or enjoying a relaxing swim on the beach. A beautiful sight is always available. Today, it was the local fisherman. Lining the beach with their makeshift fishing poles (lines), a large group of Costa Ricans can be found up and down the beach in knee deep to waist deep waters in hopes of catching dinner.

Captain Hook sets sail on the Black Pearl!

A dream finally realized! Captain Richard Hook started working on the Black Pearl at the South end of Coco Beach. Constructed by hand, it took 4 1/2 years to get the ship to set sail! In order to get the ship moving, it required the use of two back hoes and one bull dozer.

With nearly 100 onlookers waiting to see it's maiden voyage, the work begins at 8 am Thursday April 15th and made it to the waters ~ 3pm Friday April 16th. The initial move turned her a little sideways, but no fear, after 31 hours she made it to the open waters!
